Hello. I'm Paola.
I write about raising children in two or more languages, about slow play and screen-free mornings, about the words that shape children before they can hold them. I run this site partly because the questions I'm sitting with — as a linguist returning to research, as the mother of a two-year-old, as someone who grew up in Italian, had formative years in German, and lives in English — don't all fit neatly into anyone else's space.
So I made one of my own.
What you'll find here
My Mini Linguist is where I keep the practical, evergreen pieces — guides to bilingual parenting, picture-book recommendations, research distilled into something a tired parent can actually use at 7pm on a Tuesday. Most posts are around a thousand words, written to be useful rather than perfect. A handful are in Italian, because Italian-speaking families — both in Italy and in the diaspora — are an audience I've always been part of and underserved by what the English-language internet has to offer.

Who I am, briefly
I have a degree in linguistics and a CMO career I'm gently stepping away from. For fifteen years I worked in marketing and brand at corporates, startups and a fintech that exited; before that, in a first job I'd half forgotten, I helped build a learning device for primary school children. I also started a charity that still works with women in Malawi, a successful responsible fashion brand and a tech company. Motherhood changed a lot for me, and while I am grateful for all my past, I am now putting my 'work' energy into building BaBa Box — a screen-free audio destination for children aged 18 months to 8 — and pondering doing a Masters that will help me deepen these relationships between language, nature and child development. The strands turn out to be the same strand. They were always the same strand.
I am raising my daughter bilingual— Italian at home with me, English in the world, and a bit of Spanish and German with dear friends. Plus her grandparents love singing Sinhala songs to her, so that's permeating too. Some of what I write here comes from inside that experience. None of it is theoretical for me.
What I'm trying to do here
The research on early language development is genuinely good. What's often missing is a translation layer — between the science and a Sunday afternoon, between Hart and Risley and a parent's actual evening. That's the layer I'm trying to build, in plain language, with specific examples, in two languages, without the hype.
I am not here to tell you what's right for you, in your own home. You know that deep down. I am here to share what I'm reading, what's working in our house, and what the evidence suggests for the choices small enough to matter.
The work on this site is rooted in the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood — the Italian educational philosophy that treats every child as the protagonist of their own learning, and recognises the hundred languages through which children express themselves. Applied to bilingual families, this becomes a natural fit. The languages of the home are not only literal — Italian, English, German — but also the language of singing, of pointing, of repetition, of touch, of interaction with nature. I write here for parents who want to raise children inside that wider conversation, in more than one tongue, without screens, without rush.
